About Waivers

A waiver is a way to use Medicaid to pay for services to keep a person in their own home so that they do not have to move to a long-term care facility or nursing home. A person’s home is where they or their caregiver choose to live.

There are eight different waivers available in Ohio, administered by several different agencies. Each agency can be contacted directly to answer questions about the particular waivers administered by that agency. The Ohio Department of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities (ODMRDD) administers two of the waivers: The Individual Options (IO) waiver and the Level One waiver. To apply for waivers administered by the ODMRDD, please contact your local County Board of MRDD.

For further information, please review the ODMRDD “W” is for Waiver Handbook and the All About Waiting Lists Handbook.
